Cancel culture

We are all part of a pervasive “cancel culture” these days. If we disagree with a single stance that person, a business, a church, a charity takes, we cancel them. We disassociate with the person, stop buying from the business, leave the church or call off contributions to the charity.

We “cancel” them.

My suspicion is that this is happening because we are increasingly worshiping at the altar of our politics. Mainstream news, social media and a host of other factors have helped mold us into ideological zombies that react with passionate feelings at the expense of rational thought.

For most of us, it isn’t very sincere. We only cancel when something is convenient. Few conservatives are boycotting Amazon or Faceook and their left-leaning leadership teams because both offer great services. Liberals aren’t going back to the horse and buggy or ditching their smartphones even though cars pollute and so do the massive factories that build our favorite gadgets.

We are all hypocrites, and our cancel culture puts it on display for all to see.
