Cheap floor lamps

Last week, I had to throw away a floor lamp that my wife and I have had since right around the time we got married.

It was one of those $15 lamps that you can get at just about any home goods store. I think we probably got it from Target, if I know my wife at all.

We recently moved into a home that we built, and this little lamp no longer had a place. We decided with the move it was time to upgrade some of our furnishings. That included lighting.

I hate throwing out anything that has “been around” a long time. I’m sentimental, what can I say.

But this cheap floor lamp was giving me a particularly hard time. It wasn’t really because we’d had it so long, but rather what it symbolized –

A time in our life when even the simplest of everything felt like enough.

Back when an inexpensive, impromptu Friday date night perfectly capped off a week of hard work.

When we moved into our first house and had our first fireplace and never minded how tiny it was.

When we had accumulated far less stuff because, let’s be honest, who really needs more “stuff”?

This cheap floor lamp did the trick for us for so long. The fact that it no longer feels like enough makes me think I’m due for some reflecting on what is most important in life.

Can you relate?
