Getting uncomfortable
In the Western world of relative luxury, it is easy to fall into the trap of comfortable. If something isn’t fun, exciting or engaging, we so often take a pass unless it is absolutely required.
A friend recently reminded me of this truth and shared a video about the making of Eric Church’s most recent album. Eric Church understood the trap of comfortability and pushed himself and his group to the limits to avoid falling into complacency.
A few days ago I was at the barbershop where they had a show on called Impractical Jokers. It isn’t one I’d recommend if you’re looking for wholesome, family television. But I was struck by the audacity and fearlessness of the four friends as they pushed each other to the limits, making each other do the most painfully uncomfortable things in the most awkward of situations.
Finding ways to push myself is something I need. It seems hard unless there is a real thing that I have to have done that I just don’t like. Maybe I’ll start by asking for 10% off my coffee next time I’m out and go from there.
