Little moments

I end every single night by recording my activities from that day in a daily planner. I have three years of these notebooks completed now, and 2021 was the start of my fourth. Work, workouts, funny moments, travel, special occasions… it’s all in there.

It is fun to look back at monumental days and milestones along the way. That beautiful October day back in 2018 when I became a father, a family ski trip in 2019 and documenting the bizarre year of 2020.

I know those days and seasons will stand out in the grand story of my life, but I was struck by one of the littler moments yesterday.

It had been quite a while since I had seen one of my neighbors. He texted me and said I should stop by and try some of the ribs he’d smoked for the Super Bowl the day before. We are both working from home and I didn’t have any calls so I stopped by for about a half hour at lunch. It wasn’t anything extraordinary, just a couple of guys catching up over leftovers, but it was nice.

That isn’t the kind of event I’d be inclined to remember when I’m 70, but it was one of the things that made this week just a bit better. I’m glad I wrote it down as a memory last night and I hope I stumble across that page when I’m looking back at my time on this earth. Big moments make the highlight reel, but little moments make a life.
