Too much comfort

I sense that we are being sheltered, sanitized, comforted, fed, and entertained to death. We enjoy temperature-controlled environments 23+ hours a day. We have cellphones and booze and TV to distract us from anything important. We have couches that cradle us through our sedentary lives. Even those of us that workout do so by creating an artificial environment of strain and suffering; very few of us do physically-demanding labor as part of our everyday lives.

The luxuries we enjoy aren’t inherently bad, and in fact, most are great. But they are pervasive and worth escaping in real, meaningful ways from time to time.

It is difficult to know yourself deeply without stepping outside of your persistent comfort and suffering for a change.
